MIND'S EYE SEEING
The Platonic Solids were forms theorized by
Plato to comprise the five classical elements: Fire (tetrahedron), Earth
(cube), Air (octahedron), Ether (dodecahedron), and Water (icosahedron).
Ancient Greeks affiliated the dodecahedron, a regular twelve-faced
polygon, with the shape of the universe.
The "Receptive Visualizer for Seeing with the Mind's Eye" is
an open-form dodecahedron made of welded steel. At the center is suspended
a five-inch quartz crystal. Quartz crystal is one of the most abundant
minerals found on earth, whose uses range from high precision optical
devices to mystical healing rituals. The sculpture has an alternate installation
using a three-rotation-per-minute motor and audio recording of an incantation
that calls out names for states of visualization.
